It seemed like a normal day for (y/n). Instead of going to the normal training  dome provided for the students, he chose to go into the nearby forest to fight with the Grimm that lurked there instead. Not only did he not really enjoy all those incriminating stares he would get from all the other students that went there to train, but he was able to go all out, really test his limits without any restrictions.

Today was no different, he packed up his sword, changed into comfortable clothing, and was off to the forest. Little did he know of the black and red blur that followed close behind.

~0~

(y/n) searched and searched until he finally found a group of about ten Ursas in a large clearing.

“Perfect,” he quietly said to himself. As he moves to pull his sword out, his ears then picked up the faint sound of breathing in a bush behind him.

“Huh?” he turned around to faintly see red hidden in the green of the shrub. Deeply sighing, he walked over to the bush and reached in, felt something silky, grabbed at it, and pulled. In his hand was a red and black haired girl, wearing a red cape and comically still in her crouching position while he held her up, looking much like a puppy when its’ mother picks it up by the scruff. She slowly looked up at him. (y/n) was able to identify her as a girl named Ruby, as he heard her white haired teammate shout her name multiple of times out of anger. Ruby blinked a few times before casually waving at him.

“Hello! Lovely day we’re having huh?”

All she got in response was him narrowing his eyes, clearly not amused by her attempt to start up a conversation despite the position she was in. She put her arm down awkwardly.

“Sooooooooo . . . . (y/n), you gonna train out here?”

“How’d you know my name?”

“Uh, we’re in the same class, duuuuh.”

“Hmm.”

He let go of her, causing for her to make a “thud” sound when her bottom hit the ground.

“Ouch!” she yelped, rubbing her backside.

“What are you even doing here?”

“Ummmm, what would you think if I said I really want to watch you use that bad boy on your back?”

“. . . . . . I’d think you’re by far the weirdest girl I’ve ever met.”

“Hey!”

“Anyway, just why are you so eager to watch me fight with my sword?”

Springing up from the ground, Ruby explained, “Oh! Well for one thing, I’ve never seen you train with it at the training ground at school, and well, I’m such a dork for weapons. I’ve seen many used, but so far I’ve never witnessed anyone fight with a huge buster sword like you have! I’ve heard that they’re really hard to fight with mainly cause of their weight, but once mastered, you can kick some serious butt!”

(y/n) had to roll his eyes, “Yeah, you really are weird.”

“Ugh!!”

“Although,” he reached out and ruffled her hair, “I guess you’re a decently cool chick for being so into weapons.”

“H-huh?” Ruby said, straightening out her hair.

“Fine, if you really wanna watch, be my guest, just don’t get in my way.”

“Yay! Don’t you worry, you wont even know I’m here!”

“Highly doubt that,” he turned around and unsheathed his sword, “now there’s a bunch of Ursas up ahead, so I want to catch the-”

Suddenly three guns shots were heard behind him, and ahead of him he was able to hear the Ursas stir and head his way.

“What the-!?” (y/n) turned his head to see Ruby with her weapon out and the top of it smoking from the bullets it just fired, showing that she was responsible for the noise.

“Problem solved!”

“There wasn’t even one to begin with!! I was going to catch them off guard!”

“Really? I didn’t know.”

(y/n) rubbed his temples, a migraine already beginning to form. Ruby leaped up into a nearby tree with a roses petals scattering from where she was standing. She stood on a thick branch to watch the fight safely, “Go get ‘em tiger!”

(y/n)’s ears flattened on his head, “I’m a wolf,” he mumbled. He sighed deeply as he readied himself for the attack. Ruby watched in awe as he fought the Ursas that came charging at him, the first one that came close to him was decapitated right on the spot with one swipe of his sword. She cheered from him mentally as he continued to fight through each and every one of them, swinging his sword around as if it was nothing more then a stick. She was so absorbed into the fight, she didn’t notice the lone Ursa that had spotted her until it started clawing at the tree she was hiding in.

“Ehhh!?” she said loudly, surprised.

Looking down, she saw the cause for the shaking tree and reached back for her weapon, but when it was in her hand, the Ursa gave the tree a giant push, Ruby instinctively let go of her weapon to hang onto the trunk with both hands, in doing so, she watched her weapon fall to the ground below.

“Uh-oh!”

(y/n) was working on the last Ursa when he noticed the trouble Ruby was in.

“Oh give me a break,” he mumbled to himself. Cutting the Ursa down, his
weapon then shifted into a machine gun, he quickly aimed and fired rounds,
easily bringing the Ursa going after Ruby down. After seeing the the threat being blasted away, Ruby jumped down to the ground and retrieved her weapon. (y/n) rejoined her shortly, after shifting his gun back into a sword, and flicked her hard on the forehead.

“Ouch! Hey!” she whined.

“Watch yourself will you? Otherwise your stupidity will get you killed.”

“Hey, I would’ve been able to handle that on my own just fine thank you very much!”

(y/n) rolled his eyes, “Whatever you say, next time I wont interfere then.”

Sheathing his sword, he walked away from the clearing, deciding that this was enough training for one day.

“H-hey!” Ruby called out, halting him in his tracks, although he didn’t look back when he answered, “Hm?”

“Uhhh . . . . thanks for that.”

This time he turned his head to look at her, “It was nothing, you’d better hurry before something worse comes along.”

Running up to his side, Ruby began to babble on about how his form was awesome in battle.

~0~

It was a rather cool, yet still sunny, day. (y/n) thought another training session in the forest was in order so he once again set out for it. What he wasn’t expecting was to hear a confrontation in the middle of it. Curiosity getting the better of him, he followed the sound until he came across a pack of Beowolves attacked it black and red figure.

It was Ruby.

Doing some rather impressive maneuvers through the pack as she slashed her way through it. Even so, (y/n) was still able to notice some places that could use improvement. When she finished off the last Beowolf, he showed himself.

“Oi!” he called out.

She jumped from surprise and turned around, a smile was on her face when she saw who it was, “Oh hey (y/n)!”

“Just what are you doing here?”

“Uh, exactly what it looks like. I’m training!”

“I gathered that much, but why out here? Don’t you usually train in the area they provide back at the school?”

“Yeah well, I kinda like your style of training better, and boy I’m getting a real workout out of this.”

(y/n) wasn’t sure what to make of this, “Ugh, do what you want I guess.”

He began to go deeper into the forest.

“Hey! Let’s train together!”

“Eh? Why’d you wanna do that?”

“Cause it’d be fun!”

Her reason really wasn’t making sense to (y/n), but he knew better then to object to her wishes.

“Like I said, do whatever you want.”

Marching through the forest, the two hunters battles with every Grimm that came their way. During a battle with two King Taijitus, (y/n) noticed, while Ruby was fast, she lacked grace and technique. One of the heads easily knocked her out of bounds, and her scythe was flung and impaled into a tree a good meter away from her. As the black head was ready to chomp on her, (y/n) threw his sword and impaled it right in the head, but the white one was already on it’s way to make Ruby it’s dinner. She closed her eyes and prepared for the worst. Nothing happened for a few moments. Slowly opening her eyes, she gasped. (y/n)’s hands were glowing with his (f/c) aura, he had the King Taijitu by the fangs as he struggled to keep it at bay.

“Whoa!! How are you doing that!!?” she exclaimed.

“Don’t just sit there and gawk!” he shouted, ignoring her question, “get your damn scythe and finish this thing off!!”

“Well that was rude!” but she did as she was told and hacked the head right off, ending the snake’s existence. When the head fell, so did (y/n), to his knees, panting hard.

“(y/n)! You ok?” Ruby asked, rushing to his side.

“I’m fine . . . . just tired from using my Aura,” between breaths, he added, “geez, your technique could use alot of work. Swinging that scythe around blindly will easily get you tired with no progress whatsoever.”

“Eh?”

“Not to mention the way you hold it, it’s just so wrong it makes me wanna cry.”

“Hey, I still kicked butt!”

“Were you even trained on how to use that properly?”

“As a matter of fact I have! By my uncle I’ll have you know!”

“Hmm, so that’s the problem.”

“Don’t you say that! He was a great teacher!”

“With the way you handle things in battle, I wonder.”

“Ok! That’s it!” Ruby just had enough of this rogue talking not only about her, but her family member like that, she pointed her scythe at him, not caring that he was a bit worn from using his Aura, “you and me! Right here, right now!”

In an instant, as soon as she finished her sentence, she felt her weapon being knocked out of her hand. She blinked, then looked up to see (y/n) beginning to strike her with his sword. With no weapon of her own, she once again braced herself for whatever was to come. When she felt nothing, she opened her closed eyes. They met with the blunt side of (y/n)’s sword, just inches from her face, then looked up to see (y/n) looking down at her with a disapproving look, “Pathetic.”

“I wasn’t ready!”

“Alright then, this time I’ll wait for you.”

Jogging to her weapon, Ruby picked it up and got into her defensive stance, “Ok, NOW I’m ready!”

“Ok then, here I come,” and with that heads up, Ruby blinked, and the scenario that happened moments before happened again, her weapon far from her reach and his sword almost touching her face.

“See?”

“I-I don’t get it . . . . .” Ruby mumbled, looking at the ground in defeat.

(y/n) saw the distraught look on Ruby’s face and sighed, sheathing his weapon, he walked over to her’s and picked it up.

“Hey! What are you doing!?”

“You’re holding it all wrong,” he began to explain.

“Huh?”

“You’ve gotta raise your elbows a little more, and grip it like this,” he positioned his hands and arms in place as he showed Rubyt he proper way to hold it, “got it?”

“I think so.”
(y/n) handed Ruby back her scythe and watched as she tried to mimic his stance.

“Like this?”

“No no, here,” he took her hand, moving it down a bit, then he gently grabbed her elbows, lifting them up a bit. Ruby was a bit pink in the face as (y/n) put her in the proper position, never in her life had she been this close to a guy, much less be instructed by one besides her uncle. After moving her around some more, (y/n) stepped back and nodded, “Good, now hold that as I attack you.”

“What!!? You’ll fling me into the air!”

“Trust me.”

“. . . . .  . . Fine, but if I get flung, you’re buying me cookies!”

(y/n) rolled his eyes, “Yeah sure.”

(y/n) pulled his weapon and attacked while Ruby braced herself. To her surprise, she was pushed back a bit, but her scythe was still in her hands and her feet were still on the ground.

“Wow!! I did it!!” she said jumping up and down.

“Hm, not bad. And another thing, don’t you know how to at least block attacks with your aura?”

“My aur-what?”

“Figures.”

His body began to glow with his (favorite color) aura.

“Whoa!! How are you even doing that?”

“With my aura stupid, honestly, how’d someone like you get into Beacon without even knowing how to summon your aura.”

“Hey! I skipped two years worth of training without a second thought, I didn’t get to train with that.”

“Well then, looks like you’re starting now.”

He walked over to her, placing his hand on her shoulder, “Close your eyes, I’ll unlock your aura for you.”

Ruby, albeit a bit nervous, did as she was told. She heard (y/n) say some words and then a warm feeling overtook her.

“There, you can open them now.”

She did and gasped loudly, now her entire body was glowing with a red aura.

“Wowowowowowowowow!!!!”

(y/n) gripped her head to keep her in place, “Hey, it’s not such a big deal, so don’t make it one. Now, to use it, you gotta-”

~0~

It’s been hours, (y/n) had trained Ruby on how to use her aura to fight and defend herself. He even showed her a few moves in martial arts, since he quoted that “You wont always have your scythe around.”

Both were exhausted as the sun went down, but the feeling of accomplishment washed over them as they packed up to leave back to the school.

“Gee-whizz, you sure know alot about combat,” Ruby said, strapped her scythe to her belt.

“Well, I was in the White Fang after all. When we weren’t rioting or destroying property, we were training instead.”

“Hey, how bout you train me!”

“Eh?”

“Come on!” Ruby quickly begged before (y/n) could refuse, “I’ve gotta catch up to everyone here, I’m the youngest after all. Let;s train every day!”

(y/n) narrowed his eyes, “Every day?” he asked with a questioning tone.

“Oh well, how bout every other day?”

(y/n) flicked her forehead, “Look, if you really wanna get trained by me that badly, then just catch me when I’m off to do my own training, I wont give you any heads up or anything though, you’re on your own with that.”

“Fair enough!”

~0~

Even with saying that, (y/n) did make it noticeable to Ruby when he was headed out to the forest by always walking by her with his sword strapped to his back. She didn’t know it, but he secretly enjoyed teaching her what he knew about combat. It gave him a sense of purpose, something he didn’t have during his lonely years on the run.

~0~

It was the weekend when Ruby invited (y/n) out for some lunch. She wanted to do this as a “thank you” for all those hours of training he had given her.

“No, that’s not necessary,” he said when she told him, “I enjo-” he stopped himself quickly, not wanting for Ruby to truly know how he felt about their private training sessions.

“Huh? You enjoy what?” Ruby asked, having caught the last word.

“I enjoy . . . . . . . sweets, so I don’t mind just a simple cafe or something like that,” he admitted with a light blush. Sure he tried to keep his love for sweets hidden, but he’d rather she know about that then his enjoyment of their time together.

“Ooooh, looks like the big bad wolf has a soft side for sweet goodies~” Ruby teased.

“Sh-shut up and let’s go!! I’m hungry anyway!!”

~0~

Luckily, they were able to find a bakery cafe in Vale easily. Skimming the menu, Ruby said, “Look at all these cookies!! I can’t decide!!”

“I wont deny it, there sure are alot of sweets here, I might just get one of everything.”

“Hey! It’s my money! Use mister, don’t abuse!”

(y/n) had to chuckle at her comment, leaving a warm, bubbly feeling inside Ruby’s stomach. She wasn’t sure what it was. Maybe she was just hungry.

“Uhhh, h-hey, I’m ready, so I’m gonna order.”

“Go ahead, I’m ready too.”

Ruby called over a waiter who walked over to them with a bright smile. However, that smile seemed only directed at Ruby.

“Welcome! Can I take your order?”

“Yeah, I’ll just have a slice of the (favorite flavor) cake and some (favorite soda).”

The waiter paused a little, not bothering to acknowledge him or even write down his order, she looked right at Ruby, “Miss, your oder?”

“Oh uh! A dozen chocolate-chip cookies with some milk . . . . please.”

“Certainly!” the waitress took back Ruby’s menu and almost snatched (y/n)’s, “I’ll be back with your drink!” with that she walked away with a skip in her step. Ruby too notice of the fist forming in (y/n)’s hand that was resting on the table. Not knowing what to do, she reached out and lightly placed her hand over his fist.

“Huh?”

“S-sorry about that,” she said. (y/n) saw the sincere sympathy in her eyes and let out an aggravated breath, uncurling his fist.

“It’s not your fault, don’t worry about it. I’m used to it anyway.”

Ruby smiled small, retracting her hand. Surprisingly the waitress brought back both their food and drinks. As they eat, (y/n) comments, “You may have been lacking in some areas, but your fighting style is still pretty decent for someone like you. So you said your uncle taught you how to fight?”

“Yup!” Ruby answered happily, “I was a total wreck before he took me under his wing.”

“Really? You must’ve been pretty horrible then.”

“Well . . . it’s true, so I’m gonna have to agree with you on that one. And who taught you?”

(y/n) paused before answering, “My mentor, (random mentor name).”

“Ooooh! He must’ve been amazing if he taught you!”

“Yeah . . . . . . more or less . . . . .”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“Well . . .” (y/n) wasn’t sure if he should relay the breaking point of his life to Ruby, however, something inside of him just made him feel like he could tell her, “six years ago, something happened between him and I. The original leader of the White Fang had been noticing that humans have been at the places we were going to riot at before us and easily drove us away. He suspected that there were traitors in the group and had everyone interrogated. Being just kids, my friend and I were dead nervous when we denied anything to do with it. I guess it made them suspicious and just to be safe, orders were given to kill him and I, and my own mentor was to do it as his own punishment for making us who we were.”

Ruby almost choked on her own air.

“Wh-what!? But you guys were just kids, how could-”

“That’s just it, even though we were just kids, we were amongst the strongest. I’ve even overheard some of the mentors speaking to my own, trying to tell him to lay off the extensive training sessions he was giving us for we were growing too fast, but he didn’t listen. I loved him like a father, since I didn’t know my own parents.”

“D-do you know what happened to your parents?”

“All I know is that they were forced into unpaid labor after trying to get work to raise me. After they were trapped in that contract, they sent me to the White Fang to keep me safe.”

“O-oh.”

“So then, my mentor killed my friend, but the element of surprise was long gone when he moved onto me. I managed to strike back, steal his weapon, and run off, never to look back.”

“So that weapon you have . . . .”

“Yes, it was my mentors, and used to kill my best friend.”

After his tale, Ruby’s stomach felt like lead. She had always seen (y/n) carry himself well around others, no matter what they threw at him, whether it be insults or even punches. You’d never think that such a solid person would have such a disfunctional past.

“That’s just horrible.”

“What happened happened, ok? I always make it a point to never let it get me down.”

Even as he said this, Ruby was still able to detect the sadness in his voice and eyes. She thought for a minute and brought up, “Hey, besides your buster sword, what other weapons do you like using?”

“Huh? Well I guess scythe was pretty fun.”

“I know right!”

With that, Ruby and (y/n) dove into a conversation about weapons and their
awesomeness. (y/n) even told Ruby about the many he’s seen that she had yet to even hear about. The grim topic of his past long forgotten.

~0~

The two trained together very often from then on. Ruby was really able to see the fruits of her labor when she was asked to fight other students during class. As she continues to train with (y/n), Ruby couldn’t help but to slowly admire him more and more. Soon, that admiration turned into something more, something the fifteen-year-old couldn’t quite place her finger on.

~0~

“We’re gonna have a picnic in the woooooooods~ Yeah we’re gonna have a picnic in the woooooooods~!” Ruby and Nora sang loudly on the bus that was headed to a wooded area that’s supposed to be one of the more peaceful areas in the wilderness that isn’t teaming with Grimm. All the first years were in the bus with the two girls currently singing to the tune of “She’ll be Coming Around the Mountain When She Comes.” Much to the annoyance of everyone, especially their partners who were seated right by them. Sadly no amount of yelling “shut up” really helped, so everyone just grumbled all throughout the ride. Everyone except (y/n), who was seated right across from Ruby, he couldn’t help but to chuckle at her childish and upbeat personality, something that was rare in the White Fang, he wasn’t one to take this for granted and just grinned as he watched her sing.

~0~

“Uuuuuuugh, I thought that bus ride will never end,” Weiss grumbled.

“Awww come on Weiss, it was kinda cute,” Yang said.

“Cute!!? Now the friggen song is stuck in my head!!!”

“Oops, eh-heh, sorry Weiss, Nora and I couldn’t help it.”

“Let’s just enjoy the rest of our trip, shall we?” Blake suggested.

The groups walked until they reached a beautiful waterfall hidden deep in the forest. While Professor Oobleck talked about the history of the place, everyone sat around the magnificent waterfall, munching on their lunch and half listening to the energetic teacher, still wondering what the heck he’s drinking. After his lesson, he added, “Well students, feel free to roam around but be sure not to go too far, otherwise you’ll be lost for a long while since it may take days to find you and may eventually succumb to hunger and starvation!”

“Uhhhh, aren’t those two the same things?” Weiss had to ask.

“Why no you silly girl you see-” he began a lecture on how the words “hunger” and “starvation” didn’t mean the same thing to Weiss as everyone else left their picnic sites and ventured off on their own.

Ruby eagerly began to bound up some nearby rocks, although she failed to see a loose one and began to fall right back down.

“Aiiiieee!!” she felt herself land on something that didn’t feel like the ground, “huh?” she opened her closed eyes and her face flushed: (y/n) had caught her and was now holding her bridal style.

“Honestly, can’t you not walk right into trouble for at least five minutes?” he said with a smug look on his face.

“Why you-! Hey! Put me down!!”

“As you wish.”

She half expected him to just drop her, but to her surprise, he placed her down gently.

“And just what are you up to?”

“Oh! I want to get to the top of that waterfall!!”

“You do realize that’s a dangerous climb right?”

“But that’s the whole fun of it! Hey, let’s go, you and me!”

“Eh? Why me?”

“Cause none of my other teammates want to.”

“And you think I will cauuuuuse . . .?”

“Cause we’re training buddies!”

“That isn’t a logical reason, but,” he added, “I guess it couldn’t hurt.”

“Great now let’s get going!”

“Fine, but first,” he quickly scooped her up in his arms and leaped effortlessly onto the first ledge that Ruby had failed to reach, “I think you could use a good headstart.”

“Hey! I was doing just fine by myself!”

“Yeah, tell that to your fall.”

“Hmph!”

Ruby found herself enjoying the climb with (y/n), he was there when she tripped and almost fell a few times, when he was up ahead, he’d always stop and hold out a hand to her to help her up a bit, to which she always complied to. After about a twenty minute climb, they found themselves in an opening behind the waterfall.

“Whoa!!” Ruby exclaimed, watching the curtain of water fall in front of her, “this is amazing! Maybe even better then trying to reach the top!”

“For once, I agree with you.”

Ruby looked back at the cave inside the rocks, “I bet there’s some cool stuff in there! Let’s explore!”

“And here’s where I disagree with you, Ruby maybe we should-”

“Oh don’t be such a party-pooper,” Ruby grabbed at his wrist and tugged him into the cavern, “let’s gooooooooo!”

“H-hey! Ruby I don’t-” then his nose suddenly caught the scent of something different in the cave, something that worried him, “hey, this isn’t a good-” they were just entering the cave when the sound of crumbling was heard underneath them, “What the-” he was once again cut off when the ground caved in underneath them. Ruby yelled out in freight while (y/n) grabbed her, hugging her close to him in a protective manner as they fell. Ruby was too scared to even care about how close they were and clung to him until they hit the bottom.

“Uuurgh!!” (y/n) had used his aura to lighten the impact, but it still put a strain on his back when it hit the rock ground.

“Oh my gosh! (y/n)! Are you ok!?”

“J-just give me a minute.”

“O-ok.”

Ruby carefully got off of him and sat next to his body, this time waiting patiently for him to catch his breath. After a few moments, (y/n) strained himself to sit up.

“Ouch.”

“You doing better?”

“A little.”

“Can you stand up?”

“Let’s find out.”

Using Ruby as a crutch, (y/n) stood up to his feet.

“Where are we?” Ruby asked.

“Looks like some kind of really deep waterfall cave or something like that.”

“Guess there’s only one direction to go.”

“Yeah, forward.”

The two walked in silence, the sound of their shoes clicking against the rock was the only sound that penetrated the darkness around them.

“Hey, how can you tell which way to go?” Ruby asked, seeing that she and him haven’t run into anything.

“Hello, Faunus here, we have night vision.”

“Oh! I forgot about that.”

“You didn’t forget, you were sleeping in class.”

Ruby chuckled nervously. As they were approaching a corner, (y/n) saw a foreign light shining just around it.

“That’s weird.”

“Yeah, now even I can see. What’s that?”

“Whatever it is, let’s take a look, carefully,” (y/n) said, straining out the word “carefully.” They approached the corner with caution and slowly peaked their heads over it. There in a large space were a bunch of men in uniforms were moving what looked like cargo of dust and energy crystals. The two concluded that it was dust and crystals from the Shnee symbol on the cases.

“What’s all this?” Ruby quietly asked.

“The White Fang,” (y/n) answered, “what on earth are they doing here?”

“Looks like they’re in the middle of moving all of those crates, maybe to some main location maybe?”

“Seems like it, we really need to get out of here and contact Oobleck, he’ll know what to do.”

Ruby nodded and the two began their stealthy walk around the operation, hiding behind larger crates as they passed by. Sadly though, they didn’t stay hidden for long. As Ruby was quickly making her way to the next hiding spot, a White Fang member dropped some dust nearby, a gentle draft brought it over to her and tickled her nose.

“Uh-oh.”

(y/n), who was already in his hiding spot, wanted to get over there and stop her from giving them away, but he was too late.

“ACHOOOOO!!”

A huge explosion disturbed the cave and every head looked over to Ruby.

“Uhhhhhhh . . . . . . hey! Fancy meeting you guys here!” She was immediately pounced on by some men, they grabbed her and dragged her to someone who looked like he was in charge of this operation. (y/n) wanted nothing more then to leap out and save her, but he knew that he was at a disadvantage and stayed put, watching.

“Hey boss, look what we found,” they help Ruby up.

“Hmmm, a Huntress?”

The voice sent a wave of nostalgia over (y/n), (m-mentor name)!?

“Hmmm, there’s really no use for her, get rid of her.”

“Right!”

The two men were seeing stars the moment they agreed to do away with Ruby, (y/n) grabbed her and leaped a few yards away from the apparent leader. All the other men grabbed their weapons and pointed it at the two students.

“Stand down!” the leader commanded. He pulled off his mask to show that (y/n)’s assumptions were right, it was indeed his old mentor.

“(y/n)?” he said, “my, look how you’ve grown. I thought you were truly dead.”

“You know very well as I do that you would’ve preferred that I was.”

“Come now (y/n), you know I didn’t want to do away with you and (best friend name). I loved you both like you were my own sons.”

“Then why didn’t you reason with our leader that he and I had nothing to do with information leaking out!”
“What could I do? They would think I was saying that out of maternal love. I’m sorry to say that we found the true culprit a few weeks after you ran. I’m so very sorry.”

“‘Sorry’ doesn’t even begin to cover it!”

“Look, I can understand your anger, but please (y/n), come back to the White Fang, we can start anew, you’ll be part of a grand cause again, it’ll be just like old times.”

“Not a chance! I’m gonna be a Hunter, someone who’s work will actually make a change.”

“A Hunter? You? Come on (y/n), if anything you’ll be the one hunted. Do you really think anyone will truly respect, or even accept a Faunus even if he does become a Hunter.”

“He has my respect!” Ruby spoke up, standing in front of (y/n), “sure he may be temperamental and a bit rude, but humans are like that too! I know that you had known him longer then I have, but I can tell you right now that I’ve seen so many sides of him over the past months. He’s actually a really caring person, he’s helped me train a ton when he didn’t have to, he sticks up for other who can’t do it themselves, and even when he’s being treated badly, he doesn’t act out on anger like you guys do!” Ruby panted a bit after her little speech. Silence once again filled the large space, then, “Tch, very well then, kill them both!”

(y/n) leaped into action, fending off every White Fang member that came at him, showing everyone around him that he didn’t need is weapon to still be able to fight. Ruby used her speed to dodge attacks, then used what (y/n) taught her and fought back while using her aura to defend herself. All throughout this, (mentor name) watched, recognizing Ruby’s moves.

“Tsk, so he actually taught the little brat, more reason for him to die now.”

He drew his weapon, a pair of double edged swords, and went for (y/n) first. However, having learned from him long ago, it wasn’t too hard for (y/n) to interpret (mentor name)’s moves, he easily dodged and attack with his bare hands and feet. At one point he even managed to knock one of (mentor name)’s sword out of his hand and quickly grabbed at it, swinging it around effortlessly. (y/n) smirked, “Give it up, don’t think that just because you taught me that it makes me inferior to you, I know all your moves, you really haven’t changed anything at all, whereas I have matured in every way.”

(y/n)’s mentor knew that he was right, (y/n) had indeed improved over the years, having mastered everything he taught him and then some. Seeing that he wasn’t getting anywhere with him, (mentor name) shifted his focus to Ruby, who had just knocked out the last White Fang member. He leaped in front of her, smacking her with the side of his blade, not the edge.

“Uuuugh!!” she grunted, being sent to the ground.

“Ruby!!” (y/n) cried out.

“Heh heh, the dirt suites you humans better,” he raised his sword up, ready to end Ruby’s life, but it was not to be, Ruby’s body glowed brightly with her red aura and (mentor name) was flung back, his weapon meters away from him. He hoisted himself on his hands, shaking his aching head to clear it, looking up, he was met with the tip of his sword, (y/n) holding the end of it, glaring hard at him. (Mentor name) smirked a bit uneasily as he said, “Well, what are you waiting for? Go on, avenge your dear friend.”

Moments passed in silence, everyone seemed to be holding their breath in anticipation of (y/n)’s decision. His answer was lowering the sword.

“No,” he said, “killing you wont bring him back, nor would it give me any satisfaction. I’ll have the authorities deal with you. Besides, I have new friends to take care of now,” with that, he delivered a roundhouse kick to (mentor name)’s head, effectively knocking him out. Ruby smiled at him, “I’m proud of you.”

(y/n) couldn’t help but to smile back.

Ruby quickly found a way out of the hidden cave while (y/n) stayed behind to make sure the unconscious men stayed unconscious until she got back. After explaining to Professor Oobleck what had happened. About half an hour later the military was called to take all the men into custody and return all the
stolen goods back to their proper places. When the last man was loaded up into the truck, the head of police walked up to (y/n) and Ruby.

“We have you two to thank for this arrest, thank you both,” he shook Ruby’s hand and moved on to (y/n), who just stared at his outstretched hand before giving it a firm shake.

“Young man, it’s people like you that give me hope that not all Faunses are criminals, keep it up.”

“Y-yes sir.”

The officer saluted him and when his way with his other subordinates.

After that incident, most of the students no longer saw (y/n) as the bad wolf they thought for him to be. Aside from his teammates, he’s made many other friends in the school and finally began to enjoy life at Beacon. He knew he had only one person t thank for this.

Ruby was surprised to find a note that was pinned to her cape while she was leaving the classroom. She didn’t see anyone get to close to her and even if she didn’t notice, she would have at least felt the note being pinned to her cape. Unpinning it, she read it:

'Ruby, meet me at our personal training grounds after class.

-(y/n)'

She was more then a little surprised to see that he’d actually given her a hint to be over there since he’s never done anything like this before. After changing out of her school clothes, she went right to the spot where he told her to be. There he was, sitting on a rock, waiting for her.

“Hey!” she called out when she saw him. He looked back at her and grinned, sliding off the rock.

“You came.”

“Well yeah, you don’t really leave notes telling me where you are after all. So what’s this all about?”

(y/n) didn’t answer with words, instead, he placed a calloused hand on Ruby’s cheek and pressed his chapped lips against her pink ones. Ruby’s face felt like a million suns. Afraid that she might run, (y/n) secured his free arm around her waist as he kissed her. Despite his image, he was really gentle with her, handling her like a porcelain doll. At this moment, Ruby figured out her past feelings and kissed him back, wrapping her small arms around his neck. The need for oxygen forced the two apart, (y/n) was the first to speak.

“I-I really didn’t expect you to respond like that.”

“Well, to be honest, I wasn’t sure myself. But I’ve been feeling something towards you, I guess this is just the push I needed to finally conclude that . . . .” she pecked his cheek, “I really do love you (y/n).”

“L-likewise.”

“Eh? Oh come on! Say ‘I love you too Ruby”!”

“Ugh, I don’t think I can-”

“How bout ‘I love you to the moon and back”?”

“How’s that any better!”

“Well say something, or I wont let you kiss me anymore!!”

“Ehhhh!? Gugh . . . . .” (y/n) took a deep breath and looked to the side, blushing furiously, “ I-I-I l-l-l-l-love y-ou . . . Ruby.”

“You’ve gotta look at the person you’re saying that to!”

“Grrrrrrr,” (y/n) looked right into her eyes and blurted out, “I LOVE YOU RUBY!! WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL AND MIND!!”

Ruby just stood there, taking in what (y/n) just shouted, and then began to giggle.

“Wow (y/n)! Who’d ever thought you could be so awkward with romance!!” she said between giggles.

“Sh-shut up! I new to this whole thing!”

“Ok ok, I new to this too. We’ll figure it out together then, ok?”

“Fine, together. Oh yeah, before I forget,” he walked back to the rock and returned with a basket, “I just thought maybe we could skip training for today and just take it easy.”

Ruby peered into the basket and squealed, “Cookies!!! Yay!!” she snatched the basket out of his hands, quickly seating herself on a soft patch of grass and beckoning for (y/n) to join him. He sighed at her childishness, but he knew that was one of the perks she had that he secretly loved. Sitting next to her, the two shared the basket of goodies happily, showing the world that even the most unlikely people can find happiness together.
